Complete Guide to IRCTC Advance Ticket Booking (2026)
Everything you need to know about booking Indian Railways reserved tickets online — from understanding the 60-day advance booking rule to Tatkal timings, overnight train date confusion, ticket quotas, and tips for getting confirmed seats on busy routes.
What Is the Advance Reservation Period (ARP)?
The Advance Reservation Period is the window during which passengers can book reserved train tickets before the date of travel. Indian Railways currently sets this at 60 days for most regular, express, and superfast trains. This means if your train departs on June 15, you can book your ticket starting from April 16 — exactly 60 days before departure.
The ARP is set by the Railway Board of India and applies uniformly across all booking channels — the IRCTC website, the Rail Connect mobile app, and authorised booking agents. It's important to note that the 60-day count starts from the date the train departs its originating station, not your boarding station. This distinction is critical for overnight and multi-day trains.
The ARP was changed multiple times during and after the COVID-19 pandemic — it was reduced to 30 days, then 15 days, before being restored to the standard 60 days. As of 2026, the 60-day window is firmly in place for all regular services.
When Exactly Does Booking Open?
IRCTC advance booking opens at 8:00 AM IST on the booking date for regular (General) quota tickets. This timing was updated from the earlier midnight (12:00 AM) opening to reduce server congestion and give all passengers a fairer chance at booking.
Here's the complete timetable:
- Regular Advance Booking: Opens at 8:00 AM IST, 60 days before train departure from origin station
- Tatkal (AC classes — 1A, 2A, 3A, CC, EC): Opens at 10:00 AM IST, 1 day before train departure
- Tatkal (Non-AC — SL, 2S): Opens at 11:00 AM IST, 1 day before train departure
- Premium Tatkal: Same timings as Tatkal, with dynamic (variable) pricing
For high-demand routes like Delhi to Mumbai, Delhi to Kolkata, Bangalore to Chennai, and others, it's recommended to log in to your IRCTC account at least 5–10 minutes before the 8 AM window opens. Have your journey details, passenger names, and payment method ready to minimise the time from window opening to payment completion.
Understanding Overnight Trains and Date Confusion
This is the single most common source of booking errors on IRCTC, and the core problem TrainWhen was built to solve.
When you book on IRCTC, the "journey date" field refers to the date the train departs its origin station — not the date you board at your intermediate station. For short-distance day trains, this makes no difference. But for overnight and multi-day trains, it can cause a 1-2 day discrepancy.
Example: Train 12627 (Kerala Express) departs Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) at 11:25 PM on June 1. If you're boarding at Nagpur, you'll actually catch the train on June 2 afternoon. But on IRCTC, you must enter June 1as the journey date — because that's when the train left its origin. If you enter June 2, IRCTC will either show no availability or display incorrect results.
TrainWhen solves this by auto-detecting the day offset when you enter a train number. It uses the train's schedule data to determine whether the train departs its origin on the same day you board or on a previous day, and adjusts the booking date calculation accordingly.
Tatkal Booking — Rules, Timings, and Charges
Tatkal (meaning "immediate" in Hindi) is an emergency quota for last-minute travellers. It opens 1 day beforethe train's departure from its origin station.
Tatkal Charges (Over and Above Base Fare)
- Second Sitting (2S): ₹10 minimum, ₹15 maximum
- Sleeper (SL): ₹100 minimum, ₹200 maximum
- AC Chair Car (CC): ₹125 minimum, ₹225 maximum
- AC 3-Tier (3A): ₹300 minimum, ₹400 maximum
- AC 2-Tier (2A): ₹400 minimum, ₹500 maximum
- AC First Class (1A): ₹400 minimum, ₹500 maximum
Important Tatkal Rules
- Maximum 4 passengers per PNR in Tatkal quota
- No refund on confirmed Tatkal tickets if cancelled
- If the ticket is waitlisted and not confirmed, full refund is available
- Tatkal tickets cannot be booked for stations where the train arrives on the same day as origin departure (for some trains)
- Senior citizen, physically handicapped, and other concessions are not available on Tatkal
Understanding Ticket Quotas on IRCTC
Indian Railways allocates seats across multiple quotas. Understanding these can help you find available tickets even when the General quota appears full.
- General (GN): The standard quota available to all passengers, opening 60 days in advance at 8 AM. This is the most commonly booked quota.
- Tatkal (TQ): Emergency quota opening 1 day before departure. Higher cost, limited seats.
- Ladies (LD): Reserved exclusively for female passengers travelling alone or with children under 12. Available in select classes.
- Lower Berth / Senior Citizen (SS): Reserved for passengers aged 60+ (male) or 45+ (female), with automatic lower berth preference.
- Handicapped (HP): For passengers with physical disabilities. Requires a valid disability certificate.
- Defence (DF): Reserved for serving and retired defence personnel.
- Foreign Tourist (FT): Available for foreign passport holders. Can be booked in person at select railway reservation offices.
- Premium Tatkal (PT): Dynamic pricing quota with variable fares based on demand. No refund policy similar to Tatkal.
Tips for Getting Confirmed Tickets
- Book on the first day: Set an alarm for the exact date the 60-day window opens. Use TrainWhen to know this date in advance. Be logged in at 7:55 AM and refresh at 8:00 AM sharp.
- Keep your IRCTC profile ready: Add frequent passengers to your master list so you don't waste time typing names and ages during booking.
- Use fast payment: IRCTC e-wallet or UPI is faster than net banking. Pre-load your e-wallet to save time at checkout.
- Try alternate classes: If 3AC is full, check 2AC or Sleeper. Sometimes a higher class has availability because fewer people check it.
- Check alternate trains: Busy routes like Delhi–Mumbai have 10+ daily trains. If Rajdhani is full, try August Kranti, Golden Temple, or Garib Rath.
- Enable Vikalp: IRCTC's Vikalp (alternate train accommodation) scheme automatically transfers your waitlisted ticket to a confirmed berth on a different train on the same route — at no extra cost.
- Book from smaller stations: If you're flexible with boarding point, try booking from a station where fewer people board — the station quota may have seats when the main station is full.
- Avoid peak days: Travel on weekdays instead of Fridays/Sundays. Avoid booking on the day immediately before or after major festivals.
